Ya Kun Kaya Toast at Raffles City embodies Singapore's beloved breakfast tradition, serving as a cornerstone of local culinary heritage that dates back to 1944 when founder Mr Loi Ah Koon established the first coffee stall in Singapore's old commercial district. This café exemplifies the philosophy that "less is more" by focusing on humble yet perfectly executed fare consisting of charcoal-grilled kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs, and traditionally-brewed coffee and tea. Located in the basement level of Raffles City, this outlet represents the continuation of a family legacy that has grown from a single Hainan immigrant's dream into one of Singapore's most recognizable food brands. The restaurant serves both as a cultural touchstone for Singaporeans seeking familiar comfort and an essential experience for visitors wanting to taste authentic local breakfast traditions.
The menu centers around the iconic Set 1, featuring kaya toast generously spread with their special kaya recipe that has remained unchanged for decades, accompanied by soft-boiled eggs and a choice of traditional coffee or tea. Pricing ranges from .50 to .80 for complete sets, making authentic Singaporean breakfast accessible to all economic levels. The bread receives careful preparation, being toasted to achieve the perfect balance between crispy exterior and soft interior, then slathered with the signature kaya coconut spread and thin butter slices. The soft-boiled eggs are prepared to achieve the ideal runny consistency, served with dark soy sauce and white pepper that customers mix according to their preference. The traditional coffee, prepared using time-honored brewing methods, complements the meal with rich, aromatic flavors that enhance the overall breakfast experience.
Located at 1 Raffles Link #B1-04, Singapore 039393, Ya Kun Kaya Toast operates Monday to Sunday from 7:30am to 8:00pm, providing convenient access for early morning commuters and tourists throughout the day. The basement location within Raffles City Shopping Centre offers direct connectivity to City Hall MRT Interchange station and the Esplanade MRT station along the Circle Line, ensuring excellent accessibility via public transportation. The location frequently experiences crowds, reflecting its popularity among locals who consider it "a real fave" and testament to the authentic quality that draws repeat customers. The central location places visitors at the heart of Singapore's civic district, within walking distance of historic Raffles Hotel, government buildings, and major cultural attractions, making it an ideal stop during city exploration.
Ordered Kaya Toast and Butter Set, and a hot honey lemon.
Kaya Toast was a bit too sweet for me. The soft-boiled eggs with white pepper and soy sauce were delicious, though they were not hot at all when served.
Since we decided to sit at the dining place across from the restaurant, they only served our order as takeaway.

Food is standard Ya Kun quality, but the queue and wait here are ridiculous!

The tea tasted so bad that 3 of us just took a few sips and gave up. Didn't bother to exchange because the guy making the tea doesn't seem properly trained. No point in exchanging and ending up with the same bad tea. Seating at the newly renovated place is good. But definitely won't patronise this outlet again.

The egg had eggshells inside. The sauce is missing (they used to include it). The tea tastes like tea water with milk. Diluted and awful.

The man behind the counter did not know how to talk nicely, even with his body language. I could see he was pissed off with the customer before me, so I hoped he wouldn't pass that anger on to me, but I was wrong.
As I was alone, I could not reserve a table, and the only available table was taken by a couple who had just come in. Then this uncle told me to take the tray away from the counter without even looking if there were any free tables. When I was about to take the tray, he said, "Take everything." Well, everything means what? I was waiting for my toast, so was I supposed to wait for everything before taking the tray, or just take the tray and wait for my order? The way he reacted really intimidated me. I felt like I was begging for food. This ruined my whole appetite.
To be honest, the food here isn't even something to die for. With the rudeness of the staff, I won't ever come back.

The restaurant is located on the B1 level. It is quite small with limited seating space. Kaya Toast Set A comes with a hot drink, 2 soft-boiled eggs, and Kaya toast. The food tastes similar to other branches. The service was not friendly when I visited at 4 PM on Saturday.

"This outlet served a lot of tourists. Being a Singaporean, I am ashamed by how rude the staff is. They were shouting about toast not being collected. I hope the main franchise will consider withdrawing this brand from the business owner."

Tea-o peng is terrible. It's not cold at all. The kaya butter cracker had little to no kaya. Seriously? The soft-boiled eggs came with a broken yolk. This would be unacceptable at other outlets. Truly disappointing. The staff were very rude.

This place is packed and bustling with tourists. Table, stools, and circulation space are tight, so it’s not a place to slowly enjoy your kopi and toast. Perhaps due to the heavy traffic, the coffee was sappy and not smooth. The toast seems hastily slapped together, as you can see in the photo. For a local breakfast, there are so many options, and I wouldn’t recommend this place. The location is great only for tourists.

Signature breakfast of Singapore. The original kaya toast is kind of sweet. If you prefer a less sweet option, try the butter toast. The Yuan Yang is a mix of coffee, tea, and milk. It's a "weird" taste but worth trying. The space is quite small, but it opens early!

It’s nice to have a lot of Yakun branches. This branch is located on B1 of Raffles City Mall, which is near the Swissotel where I stayed, so I enjoyed Yakun kaya toast during my free time. Although it’s not very special, if you come to Singapore, you must try kaya toast. (But peanut jam toast is delicious as well.) If you are not particularly interested in the originality of Yakun's kaya toast, there are various other kaya toast restaurants, so you can enjoy it in a comfortable place.

Good food, delicious kaya toast – it's one of my favourite places for breakfast.

"I tried the Kaya set. It’s way too sweet for me for breakfast. Service was very cold, almost like back in communist China, but I guess it’s not a Michelin restaurant after all. Unlike what was described online, there was no line at all. Anyway, it’s just a local experience. I tried it, but I don’t think I’ll return soon."

The location has moved to directly opposite Tiong Bahru Bakery. Today is the second day of operations at the new premises. The store is larger and has a more organized queuing system. I'm always a fan of Ya Kun!

Ya Kun Kaya Toast is a good spot for anyone longing for a dose of nostalgia and simple soul food. This self-service café, given its bustling, easily accessible location and high foot traffic, is rarely uncrowded.
We had patronized YKKT at its former premises multiple times, but this was our first visit since it moved. The new store - situated directly opposite Tiong Bahru Bakery - is now bigger and brighter.
Our order for afternoon bites was Value Set Meal Set C (Butter Sugar Toast), which we hadn't had for a long time. It was delightful to savour the thick slabs of cold butter and sugar tucked between the warm, crisp toasts! The two soft-boiled eggs and hot beverages complemented the toasts to a T. Delicious and belly-happy.
